Speaking of Nature...

...how about some simple common sense risk management?

(From one of the best science teachers I've ever seen:)

Hmm All though the risk management idea portrayed makes sense, it doesn't answer the question of naturally caused global warming with which we can do nothing about. It assumes that global warming is soley man made and that there is indeed something we can do to take action. On the other hand, I suspect that climate change is caused by massive fluctuations in the sun's core temperature.

You may suspect that Dave, but the overwhelming majority of research into the subject doesn't.

There is no doubt that there is an affect caused by dumping thousands of tons of carbon into the atmosphere from human endeavors.

Whether it's the only cause is debatable, if it's reversible and by how much is debatable, what other factors contribute is debatable, but the basic fact of human-caused carbon loading in the atmosphere having an effect is beyond debate at this point.

The conservative approach to such knowledge is to curb that, since it is what humans have control over, while looking at all the other natural contributing factors.

I'm not totally sure you are advocating a "do nothing" attitude toward human causes of global warming, but I know that many people who do hold that attitude use similar language as you are using to advocate their point. It is to these people that my comment is addressed.

That was a darn cool video. I would add that the large-scale changes that are being proposed are things we should be doing anyway.

When I was a kid, my parents' cigarette smoke filled the entire house all day and all night. When I finally started living in a place without all that smoke, I felt so much better. We are doing that to ourselves in our own atmosphere now. Changing these carbon-producing and polluting behaviors will do nothing but help us to live in a more natural, cleaner environment.

We spend more than the next 20 countries combined on the US military. If we spent only as much as the next 5 rivals combined (and actually spent it wisely), we would be just as well protected and there would be plenty of money left over to make sure the economy survived and maybe even thrived during this period.

Even if we are totally wrong about global warming, it would be nice to get some of the sh*t out of the air.

Thank you Mr. Wizard. Great stuff.

scientific risk management is a good tool for analyzing many conservative ideas and liberal for that matter.

That is how things would be done in a rational world.

Unfortunately we live in Bizzaro world.

Phhttt.

This is very well thought out and makes perfect sense. I was on the fence about global warming until the NAS report came out myself. What's amazing to me is that most people don't understand what a big deal that report was based on the organization that issued it.

Despite the pyrotechnics I doubt the knuckle draggers will pay any attention to this video. They guy comes off as kinda gay and uses too many big words.
