Xian Mythos... or Hysteria

Or, why the fundies seems to have apoplectic fits every time they hear the words "Harry Potter"...here's an excellent article on why and how Xian fundies operate. Kind of like the Nazis re-inventing the glorious "aryan history" of Germany before the nasty Jews/Trade Unionists/Socialists came along, fundies have organized a massive PR campaign to "educate" the faithful. Too bad Adolf only had Leni Riefenstahl and not the endless tax-exempt bankrolls fundies now enjoy.

Personally, I find John Steinbecks's analysis of some big-haired southern white womens' verbal harassment of children (both black and white) attending intregrated schools in 1960 in his book "Travels with Charley" a more telling description of bigots, (racial, religious or otherwise). - it's wonderfully ironic that they were dubbed "The Cheerleaders":

"These blowzy women with their little hats and their clippings hungered for attention. They wanted to be admired. They simpered in happy, almost innocent triupmh when they were applauded. Theirs was the demented cruelty of egocentric children, and somehow this made their insensate beastliness much more heartbreaking. They were not mothers, they were not even women. They were crazy actors playing to a crazy audience." pg.195

He referes several times to this scenario as a "show", and I'm certainly inclined to agree with him, from the fundies' Hell Houses to the mega-revivals in stadiums, they are pieces of paticularly bad theater. It's no accident these "shows" are fundraisers for the churches/preachers involved in thes "productions".

Thank you Hypatia.

"Travels with Charley" - great book. I got into it as a kid (age 12) because at the time our family dog was a black standard poodle. I ended up with Steinbeck teaching me a whole lot. Oddly enough (it would seem today) my parents were Goldwater conservatives, yet their attitudes would be considered far left of center today. How America has changed.

What's really funny is the megachurch leaders that are getting busted recently for things like currency smuggling and sodomy...

Panda-Yes, I love Steinbeck too. I have read his "A Russian Journal" also. I really like his travel journals even more than his fiction work. They really capture a place in time.

Moody-It's so true, the incidents of TV evangelicals caught with their pants down has become so common place you can't keep track anymore....It'd be interesting to see what secret bank accounts are floating around some of the Caribbean nations from these folks...

“‘Those who control the present,’” Federer continued his quotation of 1984, “‘control the past.’” He paused and stared at me to make sure I understood the equation. “Orson Welles wrote that,” he said.

I don't know if the fundy quoted was being intentionally ironic but that's pretty damn funny either way.

Dean, when I first read your post, I saw, "Those who control the President..."

That works too!

The good news about this is we might be seeing the slow-motion collapse of Xian Fundamentalism power at the Federal level. This happened in the eighties with Revs. Falwell and Baker dragging the whole mess down.

As more people are exposed to the whack jobs running things, the control starts to ebb.

What really concerns me is the possiblity of a charismatic leader, who REALLY believes taking power. That was what Hitler represented for the German Nazi Party.

I just hope we don't have to live through that s**t-storm, cause the U.S is ready and waiting. Practically panting for such a "leader".

True. Whatever his faults are, I think GWB is ready to move on from this president thing. You can just sense it.

Sorry I missed this one. But I rarely have time to comment or carry on a debate. I will take exception on this occasion.
I read this article and found it well... rather like a rant right out of an old issue of Marx and Co. Magazine.... I wonder if he has any connections to WOW or its founding inspirations like one of those whack job movements who have a proven track record of butchering millions upon millions of people... In the name of eliminating terrible things... Like religion and people who disagree.

WOW...Tee Hee...Woo Hoo... I already know the answer. There may be a grain of salt in you knowing. Or at least checking it out since my time is at a very distinct premium.

Sorry if its incomplete research. But the only thing else that I can say (in my limited time from browsing some of this "Ive got a chip on my shoulder" type of guys stuff... Is shake my head at all of the electrons he killed to publish it.

V. Fundie way errant.
