Way to Go, Beavs!!!!!!!

In case you missed the news, which doesn't seem so hard anywhere outside Oregon, the Oregon State University baseball team just won the national championship with a 3-2 victory over North Carolina! It's the first time a northwestern college has ever won the title, and it's only the second time Oregon State has ever taken a national championship in any sport! (The other time was in 1961, when they won the NCAA cross country championship.)

Naturally, since baseball is neither football nor basketball, there was basically no mention of it in any of my usual news sources...though the New York Times did report it. Oh, well.

Go Beavs!!!!

As a decidedly NON-sports fan, I was happy to see we won! I've also noticed the curious weird attention to sports teams that are East of the Mississippi...

When I lived in Washington D.C., I could never find coverage of anything but East Coast Teams, sometime they'd cover Texas or LA, but that's it.

And I wasn't even lookin', fer jimminy crickets!

I still remember the time I came to visit you and Don when you lived in that flat in Milwaukie, and we watched OSU's football team play in one of the bowl games. OSU dominated the game from the start, and the announcers had a very clear "yeah, yeah...umm...anyway..." attitude about the whole thing. When the opponents finally scored (their only touchdown of the game), the announcer said, "Okay, we finally have a football game!" From then on, all of the interludes during timeouts and halftime featured the opposing college and players even though OSU went on to dominate the second half and win the game.

It was so pathetic it was funny.

What was really sad was that U of O also played in and won a bowl game that year, and the same thing happened to them!

Can you say, "discrimination"? I knew you could!

Baseball? What's that? Okay, our eldest son did play it one time here in Geelong.

The mania here this week has been the game of soccer and what a to-do about Australia being eliminated because the referee made a bad call and Italy had a corner or something. See, I don't know what I'm talking about!

Peceli plays golf four times a week usually but this week he is busy with many gatherings because of a bereavement in Melbourne. A close friend of ours - a Fijian woman, passed away. So very little time for golf.

I think Australia was punished because your country is the only one in the world besides the U.S. and Japan that calls the game "soccer". How ironic that the term originated in England (originally a slightly derogatory abbreviation of "association football" to distinguish it from rugby football).

Ever since my school here in Japan formed a sister-school relationship with a school in Caloundra (Sunny Coast region, Queensland) I've been trying to figure out the difference between what the Queenslanders refer to as "rugby" and "football" (referred to as "union football" and "league football" elsewhere in Australia, apparently). And then there's AFL (Australian Rules Football), or simply "footie".

I'm so confused!!!!!

Ack. And I still have no idea what cricket is all about. I'd probably better get busy.

You heretic! For your penance you have to wear a catcher's mitt on your head for three weeks and are only allowed to speak if you do it with umpire moves.
