American Nazi Party adopts Salem road

Marion County has allowed a Portland-area skinhead group to adopt a rural Salem road as part of a volunteer litter clean-up program.

The signs proclaiming that Sunnyview Road NE between Cordon Road and 82nd Avenue is sponsored by the American Nazi Party NSM were installed Monday.

County officials say they were legally advised that excluding the organization would violate a constitutional right to free speech. Their choices, they said, were: allow the group to join the program, remove all of the signs from the program or refuse the group and risk a lawsuit.

I'm calling Marion County tomorrow to see if they will put up an Al Qaeda sign. (Just kidding) I think any group with a history of dedicated repeated killing or physical violence toward a group of people (the Nazis for instance) could be safely excluded from public activities. I am sure the ACLU sees it differently, but that is okay with me. This, along with Bob Packwood and Tonya Harding, is what makes Oregon a great state.

It appears the citizenry has dealt with the problem anyhow...
Nazi road signs last less than a week

Count me as someone who thinks that even Nazis have the right to free speech, which would include adopting roads. Although, if I lived down there, that stretch of road would become my personal garbage dump.

There is another aspect to consider. This was a Portland-based group of skinheads adopting a road 50 miles away. Now, there are adopt-a-road programs right here in Portland's thriving metroplex. Why did they find a stretch of road where presumably none of them lived to send their message? Was it because they were rejected locally? If so, they should take it up locally. Marion Country can solve this problem easily by refusing service to groups outside the county. If they also require a public contact name for the group to be shared with everyone, that will further shed light on those people who would rather cause the problem than be scrutinized for it.

I'm all for free speech and I will defend the right of Nazis to free speech when the Marion County F**king S**t Club is allowed to post signs without the asterisks. Until druggies, atheists, polygamist mormons, and the rest of us freaks get the same respect as the Nazis get, I won't shed a tear for them.

True, I should form an atheist organization and adopt a road. It would be interesting to see what happens.

Nazi Adopt a road compromise:

Chains, leg Irons, plastic bags and no sharp objects. Sorry no sympathy here.

The problem with this, is the only thing they'll pick up along the roadside is white trash.

OH!!!!

Actually, I heard a similar story recently about the KKK being allowed to adopt a portion of the highway. Check it out: greeebs

I think I'm actually with TheHim on this one. No matter how disgusting and desperately in need of a good plank upside the head the "American Nazis" are, once you start giving the government the right to arbitrarily decide who is allowed the right of public expression, you end up giving them a legal mandate to shut down anyone that doesn't agree with their political views.

Come to think of it, our current administration already seems to be doing just that...

Hmm...maybe someone could sneak in during the night and paint the Nazi-adopted road red and the KKK-adopted road black (i.e. paint over all the stripes). THAT might be fun!

(Hey...freedom of expression doesn't mean public tolerance, as this case clearly shows!)

I til be interesting to submit one saying "Progressives for a Free America" and see what the reaction is government wise... and see how long the sign stays up without being shot, torn apart, or vandalized. Bet the nazi sign will stay up longer.

Isn't it amazing how our minds are now trained to view italics in blogspot pages?
